Mike Nelson founded this company in 1999 as a design-build general contractor. Since then, the Nelson Construction team has created some of the area’s most distinctive commercial buildings.

Mike’s background in construction engineering, his practical experience as a construction manager and his hands-on leadership techniques guide all aspects of Nelson Construction. They’re not just contractors – their business development includes project presentation, strategic planning, contract negotiation and design review.

Shiffler/Associates is known for excellent commercial, medical and custom residential work. It was formed in 1993 by D. Bryan Shiffler, winner of 17 state, regional and national design awards.

D. Bryan Shiffler earned his Bachelor of Arts and his Masters of Architecture from Iowa State University. Since then he has worked in architecture, served as an assistant professor at ISU and formed his own company. He has been the editor of the Iowa Architect magazine and serves on the American Institute of Architects National Committee on Design. He has been published in Architecture Magazine, Midwest Homes and Designs, 26 issues of the Iowa Architect and various Better Homes and Gardens publications. He is active on many local not-for-profit boards.


Simonson & Associates Architects, P.C.

Simonson & Associates was founded in 1989 and is organized around a professional staff of 11 people. They provide comprehensive architectural and construction management services to private, institutional and public clientele. Their projects represent a wide variety of building types, ranging from municipal to high-rise office buildings.

Some of their most notable projects include:

Marty Barkley is the President of Simonson & Associates. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Iowa State University in 1986, and has been working in architectural firms ever since. Marty is a member of the Iowa Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and is a past secretary for the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

Engineering

Civil Engineering Consultants, Inc. (CEC)

Civil Engineering Consultants, Inc./Landscape Architectural Consultants, Inc. offers a full range of civil engineering, land surveying and landscape architecture. The firm also provides inspection on construction projects and survey layout for contractors, cities and private owners.

CEC is currently led by Jerry Oliver, Edward Arp, Patrick Shepard, Thomas Wittman, Bart Turk and Brett Johnson.

Brett Johnson earned his degree in civil engineering from Iowa State University in 1991. Before that, he gained real-world experience in business management and surveying. He started with CEC in 1992, and today he is a shareholder. His work includes engineering design for subdivisions, and site plans, field inspection of construction projects and consulting on various types of civil engineering problems.

In 1977, Snyder & Associates opened its doors with the goal of establishing a consulting engineering firm for municipalities, schools, public agencies and private developers. In order to keep serving their clients in every way possible, Snyder & Associates continues to expand their services – from project planning through construction – utilizing their expertise in long-term capital improvement planning and municipal finance, combined with creative and economical design solutions.

Snyder & Associates is the largest civil engineering firm in central Iowa, with its corporate headquarters in Ankeny, and four branch offices in Iowa and Missouri.

William (Bill) Murphy began his civil engineering career in 1995 after earning his degree from Iowa State University. He joined Snyder & Associates in 2002, and is now the Project Manager for their Land Development Group. He has extensive land development experience, including site analysis, feasibility studies, master planning, design and development, hydrology studies and construction drawings.
